Fixing “crackly” audio in Mac OS X

To anyone else experiencing crackly/distorted/clipping audio in OS X, I finally found the solution.

Note: My audio chipset is Intel HDA, and my OS X version is 10.6.7 (Snow Leopard).

  1. Launch the “Audio MIDI Setup” app using Spotlight.
  2. On the left side of the application, click on the entry representing your speaker or headphone jack (mine was already selected by default).
  3. On the right side of the application, find the “Format” drop-down box and change it to “44100.0 Hz”.
  4. The distortion should now be gone. (The change takes effect immediately.)

Here’s hoping this post helps somebody else solve this faster than I did.
